Libraries - Files Preservation

How to deal with mold?

Mold is a type of fungus. Typically, it presents itself like spots developed on the surfaces of dead organic matter. The reproduction of fungi occurs through spores, which are invisible to the naked eye. When the spores are deposited on a surface, if the conditions are favorable, there is a development of mold. The entry of fungi in internal environments may occur through doors, windows, refrigerator equipments and previously contaminated materials.

Effects of mold installation in libraries:

The fungi feed themselves of the substrate of the material where they settle, in this case, the files. Usually, the first effect is the production of spots. With time, there is the weakening of the fibers that are present in paper, leather, fabrics or films.
The cellulose found in documents also serves as a nutrient for mold.
Added to these, there are other factors that contribute to this situation, such as bad ventilation, inadequate lighting and the accumulation of dust.

Mold spores can be found in several places, since the indoor air is never free of them, even after an intensive cleaning. The great difference in Airfree® is the wide range of efficiency tests conducted in real environments, such as libraries, by independent laboratories (ISO 17025 norm).

Institutions in several countries have already tested the device quality in libraries. Tests

AIRFREE® air purifiers are up to 99% efficient by destroying mold spores in the air, bacteria, viruses, ozone, allergens from dust and dust mites and other air pollutants, therefore representing a great ally in improving allergy sufferers’ quality of life.

How does it work?

It drastically reduces air allergens by incinerating microorganisms. As a result, contaminated air is dragged through the Airfree® ceramic centre and destroyed at high temperatures. This air purifying cycle is silent, requires no maintenance and is ensured by numerous tests.
